Best Free Spam Plugins for WordPress? Try These 4 Top-Rated Comment Spam Filters

Mmm… I’d like to moderate THAT Spam!

Spam is a major concern for every WordPress blog, and usually doesn’t arrive in delicious “Jalapeno” flavor in a toasted corn tortilla.

Spam is nasty and relentless. In fact, I have a blog that has never allowed user comments, and it still gets dozens of spam comments every day!

Anyway, you don’t have to pay to protect yourself from the mindless robots that want to destroy your peace of mind, (I’m rtt talking about Fox News anchors!) so here are a few of the best free anti-spam plugins for blogs:

akismet wordpress spam plugin

Akismet Spam Plugin

Download Akismet from

No serious post about blocking comment spam on WordPress sites is going to neglect Akismet. It comes standard on new installations of WordPress, and is used by millions of WordPress users; from beginner to advanced.

Features of Akismet:

  • Automatically checks and filters every blog comment
  • View every comment’s status history to see which were “spammed” by a moderator, or put in the “spam” folder automatically
  • URL’s are shown to reveal hidden or disguised links
  • See the number of comments approved by each user
  • Optional “discard” feature that sends obvious spam right to hell, without even saving it.

Akismet claims to stop an average of over 7 million spam comments an hour these days, which is pretty impressive.

Akismet Plugin: To Free, or Not to Free?

For non-commercial blogs, you can “name your own price” when you sign up for Akismet.

Just like any site that asks for a donation, people don’t usually pay, so let’s call that their free version. For commercial sites, they have plans starting at $5 a month with more features like online backup of your WordPress site included.

Regardless of which plan you go with, you’ll need to register on their site and get an Akismet API key to activate the plugin.

*Warning: If you try to put too many blogs under one free key, you’ll get flagged, and asked to pay!

spam shield free wordpress plugin

WP-SpamShield Anti-Spam

Download the SpamShield Plugin at

Just like the others, SpamShield is an anti-spam plugin that blocks comment spam, trackback spam, and spam in your contact and other forms.

A WordPress Spam Filter with No CAPTCHAS

People can get annoyed when you ask them to read and retype those sometimes unintelligible characters called, “CAPTCHAS” to prove you aren’t an evil spam robot.

The problem? It’s not user-friendly, and I can’t tell what those characters are half the time. When I get an error, it makes me wish i never even tried to comment.

How the SpamShield Filters Works

SpamShield recognizes that spam comes at you from both robots and humans. The plugin works like a firewall, blocking the robot spam, then identifying the spam sent by evil humans with an algorithmic layer consisting of over 100 filters.

This filter works quietly in the background, so most of the time you won’t even have to think about the junk that’s being thrown at your blog. It deletes spam instantly instead of adding it to the comments queue, which wastes time and space.

Without thousands of spam comments in your WordPress database, your blog won’t be slowed down.

Trackback Validation and Spam Filtering

SpamShield’s trackback filter compares the client IP address of the incoming trackback against the IP address of where the link is supposedly originating. If they don’t match, it’s instantly zapped as spam.

Free Spam Filter: Personal or Commercial WP Sites

This plugin is free, and if you like it, you’re welcome to make a donation. See site for WordPress requirements and more info.

Need to remove existing WordPress Comment spam?

Top 6 features of GoDaddy WordPress Hosting

They say you should practice what you preach, so I’m happy to tell you that the site you’re on right now is hosted with one of GoDaddy’s WordPress plans. So, why am I so happy with my choice? Here are the top reasons to host your WordPress site with

  • WordPress themes and plugins – You shouldn’t ever have to build anything from scratch with WordPress, as there are hundreds of site design templates to choose from, as well as countless plugins. What is a plugin? It’s a feature that you can add to your site or blog with just a couple of clicks. One example might be a plugin that optimized each of your blog posts for SEO, one that allows people to “like” your site, or creates a simple form so that your visitors can contact you. The possibilities are endless!
  • One click WordPress migration tool – Are you moving your WordPress blog from another host? That can be a daunting task in most cases, but not with GoDaddy’s managed WordPress hosting. It’s simple to use their one click tool to bring your site over including all of your previous uploads and posts
  • Nightly backups – As with anything you put online, you want to make sure it’s safe and secure. GoDaddy automatically backs up your site while you sleep. Let’s say you went to Colorado and ate a few brownies, and then decided to renounce all material possessions and throw your blog away. Well, when you came back to your senses a day later, GoDaddy would be there with a backup of your site! (Also check out Carbonite Backup; Here’s an offer code for 10% off)
  • Faster load time – It’s no secret that search engines like Google favor fast sites, and with GoDaddy’s WordPress hosting, your site will load quicker and more efficiently with performance-enhancing caching
  • WordPress Site / blog security – I have more than a dozen WordPress sites, and I’ve had all kinds of security issues over the years including something nasty called a Pharma hack that gets into your WordPress database and turns your site into a virtual Viagra store. GoDaddy provides malware scanning, firewalls, and protection from DDos for your WordPress site. (Also check out this coupon for Norton Antivirus!)
  • WordPress customer support from humans – While it’s great that hosting has gotten so much cheaper, most companies have sacrificed customer service to push prices down. The reason why GoDaddy has millions of happy customers is anchored in the fact that they have professional, American customer service including knowledgeable WordPress experts
  • Easy WordPress Version Updates – In an effort to stay ahead of any security threats, WordPress frequently asks you to update the version that you’re running. The good thing is that you can quickly approve updates directly through your GoDaddy control panel with two clicks; or choose to have WordPress updated automatically. You can also easily add an SSL certificate if you process payments or passwords, or just want the SEO benefits of having one
  • Plugin Blacklist – Did you know that there are hundreds of plugins out there that can harm or infect your site? GoDaddy maintains a database of them, and keeps you from installing any of them

Of course, you can read about all of the highlights and features of their hosting plans on their site including their 99.9% uptime guarantee and free ad credits for Google and Facebook.

This site was built with WordPress, and is hosted on GoDaddy!

As I mentioned before, I recommend the WordPress platform to just about anyone building a website, especially if you are considering a blog. I used to get my hands dirty with HTML and dragging files around, but GoDaddy makes all of that a snap so that I can spend my time working on content and not managing security, setup, or backups. Be in the 99th Percentile by getting a great deal for an SSL security certificate from GoDaddy!

Note: GoDaddy Managed WordPress Hosted Sites Can Not Buy a Static IP Address

After moving all of my sites to GoDaddy Managed WordPress hosting, I realized that you can’t buy a dedicated (static) IP address. Not a big deal for most people, but if you want your own static IP address for SEO reasons you’ll have to buy a GoDaddy SSL certificate.
